Welcome to Let’s Make A Mixtape, a music conversation show where, each season, I collaborate with my guests on building a mixtape based on a set topic. Over the next twelve weeks, we’ll build this mixtape one guest at a time, one song at a time. I only have one planned question for my guests and that is “why did you pick this song?” From there, we follow the conversation wherever it goes. Some conversations stay close to the topic and to the song, some venture further away. This season is sure to keep you on your toes and introduce you to new music.

So, what are we talking about this season? Home.

It can be a physical place or a state of mind. It can be something you’re born into or something you create. It can be your family or surrounding community. It can be some of those things or all of them.

As human beings we all have an idea of what home represents to us. There are a lot of songs about home. Songs of love, songs of resistance, songs of longing, songs of home on the road, songs of homes lost, and homes built. It can be a heartwarming topic and it can be a heartbreaking topic.

Over the following twelve weeks, we’ll explore concepts of home through music and the lived experience of twelve guests who are mostly, but not exclusively, musicians. Some guests on this season will be from the place I call home, Durham, North Carolina. Others will be from much further away. Each episode has something unique and special to offer and I’m so glad you’re on this journey with us.

Be sure to follow along wherever you get your podcasts. Add the mixtape on Spotify or YouTube so you can listen to each new song selection as it is added. Both are linked in the show notes. And about the show notes, my guests talk about a lot of interesting things and each episode comes with a transcript thanks to the power of AI (and me spending a lot of time combing through and editing the transcript that is often far from perfect). Within each transcript I’ll link to things my guests mention as well as embed relevant YouTube videos or Bandcamp tracks. You can have the full multi-media experience here with Let’s Make A Mixtape.

While I don’t contribute to the mixtape selection, I did want to end this season two prologue with a song that both reminds me of home and segues into our first guest of the season. For me, home is a feeling more than a place. There’s a physical place that I call home, a place where I feel at home, but it’s not the only place where I feel at home. Community is a big part of feeling at home for me, especially as it relates to music. My first guest on this season is a friend, mentor, and the person who, nearly 11 years ago, officiated my wedding. He was an integral part of the music community when I was in college, a community that ultimately resulted in my partner and I putting roots down in Durham, North Carolina.

This song I’m going to leave you with gives me goosebumps every time. It is a song that reminds me of home. It’s called Bull Durham, by Jason Kutchma. Tune in next week as we kick off season two: homesick, talking about Jason’s song selection and what home means to him.
